HISTORY
THE BOERBOEL IS A MASTIFF BREED FROM THE REPUBLIC OF SOUTH AFRICA.  THEY
WERE KNOWN AS FARM DOGS AND USED FOR A VARIETY OF PURPOSES FOR OVER 300
YEARS.  DURING MOST OF THIS TIME THEY WERE FAVORED FOR THEIR INTIMIDATING
SIZE, RELIABLE INSTINCTS AND INCREDIBLE COURAGE.  IN THE EARLY 1980'S A BREED
STANDARD WAS DEVELOPED TO CAPTURE THE BEST PHYSICAL TRAITS  AND UNIQUE
CHARACTERISTICS OFFERED BY THIS  "OLD WORLD WORKING BREED".  BOERBOELS
EXCEL AT GUARDING PROPERTY AND CHILDREN.  THEY ARE SAID TO HAVE AN
UNDERSTANDING, AS TO WHO SHOULD,  AND WHO SHOULD NOT BE ON YOUR
PROPERTY.  A BOERBOEL IS HIGHLY SUSPICIOUS OF STRANGERS, UNTIL PROPERLY
INTRODUCED.  IF A BOERBOEL FEELS ITS OWNER OR CHILDREN  ARE IN DANGER  THEY
WILL TAKE CHARGE OF THE SITUATION IMMEDIATELY.  THIS IS WHY BOERBOELS NEED
EARLY SOCIALIZATION AND TRAINING.

WORLD WIDE THE BOERBOEL IS GROWING IN POPULARITY.  THEY ARE ONE OF THE MOST
ACTIVE AND AGILE MASTIFF BREEDS REMAINING. THEIR STRENGTH AND COURAGE IS
LEGENDARY IN THEIR HOME COUNTRY OF SOUTH AFRICA.  MANY BOERBOELS HAVE
GIVEN THEIR LIVES DEFENDING THEIR OWNERS FROM MARAUDERS AND DANGEROUS
AFRICAN WILDLIFE.  MOST ENCOUNTERS WITH THE BOERBOEL HAVE LEFT ITS QUARRY
DEAD OR SURE TO NEVER RETURN. THAT IS WHY SO MANY SOUTH AFRICAN SETTLERS
FOUND THIS BREED TO BE AN INTRICATE PART OF THEIR FAMILY LIVES.  WITHIN THE
HARSHEST OF ENVIRONMENTS AND AMID THE MOST DANGEROUS WILDLIFE ON THE
PLANET, THE BOERBOEL SECURED AND PROTECTED  A PLACE FOR THEIR OWNERS TO
CALL HOME.

TEMPERAMENT
TEMPERAMENT IS OF THE UTMOST IMPORTANCE WHEN SELECTING A BOERBOEL.  WITH
ANY BREED OF DOG THERE IS A VARIANCE IN TEMPERAMENTS.  SOME DOGS ARE TOO
AGGRESSIVE TO BE AROUND ANY STRANGERS, AT ANY TIME. OTHERS ARE TOO  SHY  TO
MEET NEW HUMANS.  NEITHER OF THESE TRAITS DEFINES THE AVERAGE BOERBOEL.
THIS BREED HAS LIVED AND WORKED,  SIDE BY SIDE, WITH HARD WORKING FAMILIES
FOR CENTURIES.  BOERBOELS WITH ANY REAL TEMPERAMENT FLAW, WERE USELESS TO
THE FARMERS AND SETTLERS AND WERE CULLED FROM SERVICE. MOST WERE
DESTROYED.  WITH THE POPULARITY THAT THE BOERBOEL NOW ENJOYS, IT IS LIKELY
TO HAVE SOME TEMPERAMENT FAULTS CROP UP.  WORLD WIDE THE BREEDERS OF THE
BOERBOEL HAVE DONE A FINE JOB OF FOCUSING ON TEMPERAMENT.  IN MOST CASES,
BOERBOELS WITH TEMPERAMENT PROBLEMS ARE A PRODUCT OF THEIR  ENVIRONMENT
NOT POOR BREEDING PRACTICES.

GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT
ANOTHER IMPORTANT ASPECT OF OWNING A BOERBOEL IS, HOW TO PROPERLY HANDLE
THE INCREDIBLE EARLY GROWTH PROCESS.  FROM  BIRTH TO ONE YEAR OF AGE A
BOERBOEL WILL DEVELOP A HUGE FRAME, WHICH CONTINUES TO FILL OUT FOR THE
FOLLOWING 16 TO 24 MONTHS.  THE BREED AVERAGES 4 POUNDS PER WEEK IN WEIGHT
GAIN AND GROWTH SPURTS IN HEIGHT CAN BE 1 TO 3 INCHES IN A SINGLE MONTH. THIS
IS NORMAL DURING THE FIRST 8 TO 12 MONTHS OF LIFE.  FOR THIS REASON IT IS
ADVISED TO KEEP YOUR PUP LEAN AND NEVER ALLOW THEM TO  APPROACH OBESITY.
EXERCISE IS NEEDED DURING THE FIRST YEAR, BUT CAUTION AND COMMON SENSE MUST
BE APPLIED AS WELL.  OVER EXERTION AND EXTREME ROUGH-HOUSING CAN CAUSE LONG
TERM INJURY TO JOINTS AND MUSCLES OF DOGS UP TO 18 MONTHS OF AGE.  AS THEIR
GROWTH PLATES WIDEN, TO ACCOMMODATE THE NEXT GROWTH SPURT, BIG DOGS ARE
AT A HIGHER RISK FOR INJURY.  WE PAY CLOSE ATTENTION TO THE SURFACES OUR
YOUNG DOGS ARE EXPOSED TO. LAMINATE FLOORING, TILE, SLICK WOODEN SURFACES
AND ICE ARE PLACES A GROWING BOERBOEL PUPPY CAN EASILY DO DAMAGE TO
THEMSELVES. THIS IS TRUE FOR OTHER LARGE BREEDS AS WELL.
PROPERLY FEEDING A BOERBOEL IS IMPORTANT FOR MANY REASONS. THIS IS TRUE FOR
ALL BREEDS, BUT LARGE AND GIANT BREEDS HAVE MORE PROBLEMS THAT A
CONTROLLED DIET IMPROVES. WE SELECTED A MODIFIED VERSION OF THE "BARF DIET".
RAW CHICKEN OR RAW BEEF OR STEAMED PORK (10 -22 ONCES) DAILY, 1/3 THE
RECOMMENDED (DRY TOP QUALITY DOG FOOD) DAILY, RICE OR RICE SOUP 5 DAYS A
WEEK,  FRESH FRUITS, FRESH AND COOKED VEGGIES, ONE RAW EGG 3 DAYS A WEEK,
FISH OIL AND VITAMIN C DAILY.  WE FEED TWICE A DAY TO LOWER THE MEAL SIZE,
HELPING WITH DIGESTION AND BLOAT. IT NOT A REQUIREMENT TO FEED 2 TIMES A DAY,
BUT WE HAVE HAD GREAT RESULTS WITH THIS PROCESS FOR 34 YEARS. DRY FOOD AND
FRESH RAW MEATS ARE SERVED EVERY MEAL AND THE OTHER FOODS ARE MIXED IN AND
MOISTENED WITH WARM WATER OR SOUP.  WHILE THIS PROCESS IS TEDIOUS AND
SOMEWHAT TIME CONSUMING IT HAS KEPT THE VET BILLS DOWN.  SINCE CHANGING TO
THIS DIET WE HAVE NOTICED A BIG IMPROVEMENT IN ALL OF OUR DOGS OVER-ALL
HEALTH. NOTABLY IN HEAT TOLERANCE AND REDUCED WATER CONSUMPTION.

I OBVIOUSLY HAVE A GREAT AFFECTION FOR THE BOERBOEL OR I WOULD NOT OWN 6 OF
THEM. THIS GREAT BREED OF DOG DOES HAVE SOME PROBLEMS AND BY NO MEANS ARE
PERFECT. HEALTH WISE, HIP AND ELBOW DYSPLASIA, EYE ENTROPY, AND PROLAPSED
UTERUS ARE 3 OF THE MAJOR HEALTH MATTERS THAT ONE NEEDS TO BE AWARE OF.
ALMOST ALL LARGE AND GIANT BREEDS OF DOGS HAVE
HIP DYSLEXIA WITHIN THEIR
GENETIC MAKE-UP. VERY FEW BREEDS THAT EXCEED 90 POUNDS ARE EXEMPT FROM THIS
DISEASE.  BOERBOELS HIPS ARE BETTER THAN MOST GIANT BREEDS AND MUCH OF THAT
CREDIT GOES TO PAST BREEDERS (1983-PRESENT)THAT MADE SACRIFICES AND ONLY
BRED THEIR QUALITY HIPPED DOGS. THE BOERBOEL OF 40 TO 300 YEARS AGO COULD
NOT AFFORD TO HAVE BAD HIPS BECAUSE THEIR DUTIES DEMANDED AGILITY AND
STAMINA, SOMETHING THAT DYSPLASTIC DOGS DO NOT POSSESS. UNFORTUNATELY,
EVEN TWO DOGS WITH GOOD OR GREAT HIPS SOMETIMES PRODUCE OFFSPRING WITH
HIP PROBLEMS.  HOWEVER, THIS IS FAR MORE RARE THAN TWO DOGS WITH POOR TO
BAD HIPS PRODUCING DYSPLASTIC OFFSPRING. THIS MEANS SELECTING FOR QUALITY
HIPS FOR TWO OR MORE GENERATIONS HELPS ENSURE A HIGHER POSSIBILITY FOR
GOOD HIPS ON YOUR PUPPY. DYSPLASIA IS A COMPLEX MATTER WITHIN THE GENETIC
MAKE-UP OF A BREED. BECAUSE IT IS AFFECTED AT SEVERAL SITES IN A DOGS GENETICS,
IT IS STILL ONE OF THE LEAST KNOWN FACTORS ABOUT MANS BEST FRIEND.
ENTROPY IS THE TURNING IN OR OUT OF AN EYE LID IN A DOG. THE BOERBOEL HAS THIS
PROBLEM AS DO MANY LARGE AND WRINKLED BREEDS.  IT IS A TRAIT THAT PASSES ON,
SOMETIMES ONE OR TWO GENERATIONS LATER.  SEVERE CASES ARE WHAT REALLY NEED
BE MONITORED CLOSELY.
A PROLAPSE OF THE UTERUS IS ALSO COMMON IN MANY BREEDS AND ONE OF THE
PROBLEMS THAT THE BOERBOEL CONTINUES TO BATTLE.  UNFORTUNATELY THIS IS ALSO
A TRAIT THAT CAN HIDE FOR SEVERAL GENERATIONS BEFORE IT BECOMES A PROBLEM.
MANY OF TODAYS HIGHEST SCORED DOGS CARRY THE GENE.
DNA TESTING IS BECOMING A MANDATORY PART OF BREEDING THE BOERBOEL. WITH
SOME TIME AND HELP FROM THE BREEDING COMMUNITY THESE PROBLEMS CAN BE
MINIMIZED OR POSSIBLY ERADICATED.

YA GOTTA LOVE THEM ANYWAY
BOERBOELS HAVE SEVERAL NON MEDICAL TRAITS AND IDIOSYNCRASIES TO BE
PREPARED FOR. FIRST AND FOREMOST THEY SLOBBER. LIKE ALL GIANT DOGS AND MANY
DOGS THAT BREATH HEAVILY (BRACHYCEPHALIC)THE BOERBOEL WILL GREET YOU WITH
A NICE SMEAR WHENEVER THE CHANCE ARISES.  THEY ARE BIG, ACTIVE DOGS AND LOVE
TO SHARE THEIR SLOBBER WITH YOU AND WHATEVER YOU ARE WEARING. IT SEEMS THE
NICER THE CLOTHING THE HIGHER THE CHANCE OF A WET AND AFFECTIONATE GREETING.

BOERBOELS DO NOT LAY DOWN, THEY FLOP, DROP, PLOP, AND TIP OVER. FOR SOME
REASON THEY LOVE TO BE VERY ANIMATED AND MELODRAMATIC ABOUT GOING DOWN. I
MENTION THIS BECAUSE A FLOPPING BOERBOEL PUP CAN TAKE YOU OFF YOUR FEET OR
SURPRISE YOU WHEN YOU ARE ON THE FLOOR AND THEY DECIDE TO JOIN YOU.

BOERBOELS SNORE AND DREAM ALL NIGHT LONG. THEY ARE ON GUARD EVEN WHEN
SLEEPING.

BOERBOELS GROWL AT ODD NOISES. THEY SOMETIMES GROWL EVEN AT REGULAR
NOISES, LIKE DOORS OPENING OR WIND HOWLING OUTSIDE. I SAY THIS BECAUSE THEY
HAVE A VERY DIFFERENT GROWL WHEN THREATENED OR WHILE PROTECTING THEIR
LOVED ONES. THIS BREED IS VOCAL AND THEY GIVE A WARNING GROWL, WHEN OTHER
BREEDS WOULD SIMPLY PERK UP THEIR EARS.  THIS IS NOT A PROBLEM IN ANY WAY,
BUT A UNIQUE TRAIT THAT GREAT WATCH DOGS EXHIBIT.

BOERBOELS MUST PUT A PAW SOMEWHERE ON YOU WHEN YOU ARE SEATED, ESPECIALLY
IF THEY LIKE YOU. THIS IS NOT A SIGN OF DOMINANCE WITH THIS BREED, AS MOST OF
THE TIME IT IS SIMPLY A GESTURE OF AFFECTION. NOT THAT THIS IS SUCH AN
UNCOMMON HABIT FOR DOGS, BUT BOERBOELS CAN WEAR YOU OUT WITH THIS TRAIT.
IT MEANS A GREAT DEAL TO THEM TO HAVE PHYSICAL CONTACT. IT SEEMS THEIR FRONT
PAWS ARE HOOKED STRAIGHT TO THEIR HEARTS.
